5 Things You Need To Know About Probiotics
Written by: Jen Cox - AdvDip NAT + WHM. @keeperandkin
Bacteria can be good for you!
Bacteria are not all bad. Yes, some are responsible for sore and inflamed infections, but others actually need to live in your body to keep things ticking along nicely. We have a colony of both in the body - including some level of bad bacteria, yeasts and fungi - which are completely normal and healthy when in balance.
All probiotics are not the same.
They have varied strengths and benefits. Some, such as L. acidophilus, can treat urinary tract infections while L. rhamnosus is a great choice for allergies. This is one of the reasons we recommend different blends for different age groups. Our Broad Spectrum Baby Probiotic contains strains specifically selected for childhood illnesses or colonising a healthy immune system base, while the Coconut Plus addresses more grown up concerns. For more details on probiotics for skin, pregnancy or other specific health focuses check out our Health Hub here.
Treatment works best when consistent.
Repeat after me: your microbiome is stable but not static. Real, lasting change can take time. This means that consistency with your daily dose is key if you want to achieve this, no matter the health objective. Opt for the Subscribe and Save option when purchasing in our store to ensure your supplement routine is consistent.
Once open, keep the friendlies in the fridge.
Taking care of your probiotics properly can make all the difference. This starts when you open the jar - once cracked, your PONO friendlies need to be kept in the fridge. This keeps them fresh and ready to do their best work… kind of like an astronaut in hypersleep while they travel to a far off galaxy. Probiotics are sensitive souls.
Diet still matters.
Supplementing with probiotics should only ever be part of the puzzle. We still need to feed the friendlies once they’re on the inside! This is best done with a balanced wholefoods diet containing oodles of fresh fruits & veggies. Not sure how to feed your microbiome? We’ve got this. Try our balanced 28 day Wellness Challenge for all the best tools to nourish your gut. We also recommend you incorporate a Prebiotic like our Nourishing Reds for targeted tummy love once your probiotics have moved in.
